TOYOTA'S CROSS COUNTRY SOLAR CAR RACE

June 10, 2008 - Based on 5/8/08 www.svp.umn.edu article

Centaurus is the name of a solar car designed by students at the University of Minnesota to compete in a cross country race known as "2008 North American Solar Challenge" sponsored by Toyota. The car was unveiled to the public May 9, 2008 at McNamara Alumni Center Plaza in Minneapolis and is gearing up for the 2,400 mile race July 13-22 this summer. The race will begin in Dallas, TX and finish in Calgary, Alberta.

U of M's team is one of 26 teams competing for design, construction and operation of solar-powered cars. The University has created seven previous designs for a solar car.  All of the work has been funded by donations. Centaurus is over 3 feet tall, 16 feet long, 6 feet wide and weighs about 420 pounds.
